In the first programme he shows how creation myths and cautionary tales were created to explain humans’ place in the world, and how we should conduct ourselves in it. And when groups came into contact with each other, myths and epics were invented which showed how they might deal with the threats and danger that sprang from conflict. The arrival of the novel he argues came at a time when society felt less threatened and so could explore the highways and byways of living our lives.

The second programme looks at how creation myths and epics in the 21st Century continue to be part of our experience of storytelling, and that through computer games and social media people assume different identities – hero, villain, warrior, and peacemaker. The series ends with the thought that perhaps we humans are the servant of the story, the vessel through which story lives, and it’s the survival of ‘story’ that is paramount.

Una de las cosas que he descubierto con esta nueva cámara es que, en la posproducción, al hacer zoom, encuentro otras fotos que nunca vi cuando tomé la fotografía original. Personas que no tenían ni idea que eran fotografiadas, que yo no tenía ni idea que las estaba fotografiando. Aquí arriba, por ejemplo, se ve a la pareja desayunando en la terraza; puedo ver detalles que no podía observar a simple vista desde el lugar tomé la fotografía: el color y textura del mantel, el interior de la cocina, el diseño de la camiseta de él, la mano de ella sobre la taza, en fin, una pequeña historia dentro de la gran imagen, dentro de la historia principal. Estas otras lecturas son totalmente accidentales y son proporcionadas por una tecnología superior a la del ojo; no sé cuál deba ser su lugar en la narrativa visual pero sin duda la hacen más compleja y le agregan textura.

En otra foto encontré a una chica tomando el sol en su terraza; en otra, la primera plana de un diario; en otra, a los albañiles descansando en una azotea; en otra, a una señora molesta. Aquí puede verse una selección de esos detalles ocultos.

Las bahías de Río al atardecer

Río de Janeiro sorprende por el obvio contraste entre lo inabarcable —su geografía— y lo perfectamente escalado a la proporción humana —la ciudad. Y todo eso habitado por una de las razas más famosas y peculiares del mundo: los cariocas. En todos los momentos en Río, en cualquier sitio, esas tres fuerzas se sienten: el paisaje, la mano del hombre y el hombre. Río entra en la misma categoría que Lisboa, San Francisco y Sarajevo, en donde el lugar y sus características son la condición urbana primordial; en donde la sensación de lugar es superior.

São Paulo es muy distinto. Entra en una categoría 100% urbana, como la Ciudad de México o Los Ángeles.

Oliver Blanchard, the French chief economist of the International Monetary Fund, who spent much of his professional career in the United States, argues that Europe and the United States made different choices as they became richer and more productive. Americans chose to deploy their higher productivity to earn more money and buy more goods and services. Europeans “spent it” on more leisure time and more time working on household chores.

Many economists will understand these choices as rational manifestations of different preferences. The French chose time and the Americans money because they preferred it. Their choices should make them both happy. But there is another possible reading: Americans chose an unhappier path.

Some of the same studies that show Americans stuck in a happiness rut since the end of World War II suggest that the French have become happier with their lot. The French work 440 hours a week fewer than Americans partly because they take seven weeks’ vacation, compared with fewer than four in the United States. They sleep the longest of all citizens of the industrial world. They spend two and a quarter hours a day on meals, an hour more than in the United States. And they devote almost an hour a day more to leisure than Americans do.

French women spend more than twice as much time as Americans on meals and almost 50 percent more on active leisure—like doing sports or going to shows. American women spend about 10 percent more time working and a third more on passive leisure activities like watching TV. As it turns out, Americans like the French life better than their own. Researchers found they if American women were to reorganize their days to spend time as the French do, they wouldn’t be quite as happy as the French, but they would be happier than they are with the lives they lead.
